چکیده

Introduction Due to increased awareness of the toxicity of organic substances, government organization, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), have continually decreased the permissible exposure limits of many organic substances. For example, in the last ten years, the permissible exposure limit for benzene has been lowered from 10 to 0.1 ppm. This has lead to an increased demand for sampling methods and devices capable of measuring these low concentrations. Although passive diffusive methods have been used for more than a decade, there is still hesitation about their performance as compared to the tube/pump method.

The effect of respiratory exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene on the spirometric indices among the petroleum products loading workers

Abstract Background and Aim: Benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene (BTEX) are the most important aromatic compounds in petroleum products. BTEX compounds due to their high vapor pressure, easily change to gas form and mixed with ambient air. Petroleum products loading workers are exposed to these compounds by the inhalation of BTEX compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ef...

بررسی میزان انتشار بنزن، تولوئن، اتیل بنزن و زایلن در هوای بیمارستان امام حسین(ع) شهر شاهرود

Background: Exposure to some volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene cause adverse effects on organs and nervous system and moreover causes spread of diseases such as cancer , leukemia which would result in increasing  medical expenses. This study is aimed to detect and measure BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) in air and compare it with reco...

Biological monitoring of petrochemical industry workers exposed to benzene, toluene, xylenes, methyl ethyl ketone, and phenol in Southern Iran

Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including carcinogens and toxic compounds, are produced in petrochemical industries. We undertook this study in order to study workers’ respiratory exposure to different VOC concentrations and compare the results with the urinary levels of its metabolites and study the correlation between them in petrochemical industries. Materials and Met...

Assessment of dermal exposure to benzene and toluene in shoe manufacturing by activated carbon cloth patches.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this investigation was to use activated carbon cloth (ACC) patches to study the probability and extent of dermal exposure to benzene and toluene in a shoe factory. METHODS Inhalation and dermal exposure loading were measured simultaneously in 70 subjects on multiple days resulting in 113 observations. Dermal exposure loading was assessed by ACC patches attached to likely...

Cancer Risk Assessment Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) in the Production of Insulation Bituminous

Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene and Xylene are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with approximately similar physical and chemical characteristics. Benzene and Ethyl-benzene are known carcinogen as well as they affect the circulatory, nervous, and reproductive and respiratory systems. Toluene and Xylene also damage the nervous and reproductive systems. The main purpose of this study is to determ...
